Our Struggle to Get Married in Germany: An International Couple’s Story

We’re Sarah and Ahmed, and we fell in love while studying in Germany. We knew we wanted to get married in Germany, but we didn’t realize just how complicated the process would be.

One of the biggest challenges we faced was the requirement for original birth certificates from our home countries. We had to obtain new birth certificates, which took a lot of time and effort. We also had to have the documents translated into German by a certified translator, which added to the cost.

Another hurdle was the requirement for a certificate of no impediment to marriage, which verifies that there are no legal impediments to the marriage. Ahmed had to obtain this document from the Nigerian embassy in Berlin, which was a time-consuming process.

Despite our best efforts, we were unable to fulfill all the requirements for getting married in Germany. We were frustrated and disappointed, and we didn’t know what to do next. That’s when we started looking for alternatives and discovered that Denmark had much lower legal requirements for getting married.

Our wedding in Denmark was a breeze for us. We only needed our passports and birth certificates, which had already been translated into English. The whole process was quick and hassle-free, and we were able to have the romantic wedding of our dreams.
