Our Love Knows No Borders: A Gay Couple’s Journey to Get Married
Hey there, we’re Luca and Timo, a gay couple from Brasil and Germany. We met in Rome and knew straight away that we wanted to spend the rest of our lives together. We were excited to get married and make our love official, but little did we know that the process of getting married in Germany would be so complicated.
The process of marrying a foreigner in Germany can be complicated depending on your nationality. Both Fiancees must submit documentation to the registrar, such as a certified copy of their identification document and a birth certificate, in general. A visa valid for three to six months may be required for one of the partners if they are not from the EU.
As an international gay couple, we faced several hurdles, including the need for original birth certificates from our home countries and a certificate of no impediment to marriage. We spent months navigating the bureaucracy and trying to obtain all the necessary documents, but we still couldn’t fulfill all the requirements for getting married in Germany. We were feeling discouraged and disappointed until we discovered that Denmark had much simpler legal requirements for getting married.
